Avista DevelopmentSteam Plant Square's Managing Partner is Avista Development Inc. Avista Development, a wholly owned subsidiary of Avista Corp., is a venture company that manages and markets the corporation's community investments, including real estate and other assets. These activities support community and economic development throughout the Northwest. Ten years after shutting the steam plant down, Avista Development, a wholly owned susidiary of Avista Corp, teamed with Wells and Company, a local design-build firm specializing in historic renovation and neighborhood redevelopment to restore the facility. The vision was to transform the Steam Plant into a vital community landmark, and a catalyst for revitalization of Spokane's historic Davenport Arts District. When the design team, first stepped into the building, they were confronted with raw industrial space never intended for public use. Accessed only from unkempt alleys, the old steam plant had no parking, no front door or proper exits, no heat, and it was literally on the wrong side of the tracks from Spokane's central business district. Converting this challenging property into a vital, functioning community landmark demonstrated the extraordinary potential of historic preservation. The renovation was the catalyst for creation of an historic district, and since the project's inception, more than ten other major renovations to nearby properties have transformed this neighborhood into a thriving mixed used urban center.
